One Community One Book - The "One Community One Book" selection for May 2018 is Ernest Hemingway's moving and beautiful novel of love and war in World War I Italy.  Copies are available through your Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries.  Visit the One Community One Book page on Facebook.

The library is located on Old Goodrich and is next to the Clarence Town Hall. Wheelchair accessible. Parking lot available. Drop box available.

Public Access Computers: 19 computers, networked.  Microsoft Office applications and Internet access.  Printing from computer: B&W 10¢ per page, color 25¢ per page.  "What can I do at a Public Access Computer?"

A Meeting Room is available as a location for community informational services and for programs or meetings of established and recognized groups and associations whose purposes are educational, cultural, civic, or of general community interest.

Assistive technology for the visually impaired:

  • An Optelec Clearview 300 Low Vision Magnifier is available for use in the library. Donated by the Lion's Club of Clarence.
  • The Aladdin Classic is available for use in the library.  Purchased with funds donated by the Lion's Club of Clarence.
  • Pebble HD Hand-Held Magnifier is available for use in the library. This item was purchased with funds donated by the Lion's Club of Clarence.
  • Digital Talking Book Players from the New York State Talking Book & Braille Library are available for in-house use by eligible patrons.

 

What's Special About the Clarence Library:

The library opened at its current location in September 2001 and is one of the largest community libraries in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System.

A special toddler and preschool area promotes reading with parents. Adults have a relaxing area in which to read newspapers and magazines. Free WiFi is available and the Clarence Library regularly offers a variety of computer classes through its "Clarence Library Cyber-Train."  The library is well known for the variety of Summer events and programs for children and their families and also provides quality programs throughout the year.  Situated in a park-like setting, the library affords many new opportunities to its community and is a state of the art library for both adults and children.

A monthly Senior Activity Day at the Clarence Library in partnership with the Clarence Senior Center

The Clarence Bee Newspaper: Bound volumes (1965-1982) and microfilm (1983-2014)

Flight 3407 Memorial - Designed by Hadley Exhibits and dedicated in October 2017, this informational touch-screen kiosk provides biographies of the loved ones lost in the tragic crash of Flight 3407 that took place in Clarence Center on February 12,  2009 and provides a history of all facets of the tragedy including a tribute to first responders and to the work of family members who have campaigned tirelessly in Washington D.C. to ensure adequate pilot training and have helped bring about improved airline safety and pilot training regulations.

Fast n' Furious: LEGO Grand Prix - for children ages 5 to 12 - Monday March 5, 4:00 pm.  Call the Youth Bureau at (716) 407-2162 to register by February 26 to register. Program is full.

  • Preschool Storytime: Recommended for ages 3-5 years. The child must be able to attend the program independently. Adult caregivers must remian in the building.March 13, 20, and 27, 2018.  Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins February 27.
  • Wee Read Recommended for ages 8 to 24 months. Caregivers must remain with the child during the program.March 14, 21 and 28, 2018. Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins February 28.

Engineering Fairy Tales- Help some of your favorite fairy tale characters solve their problems with hands-on projects! March 6, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. Registration begins February 20.

Clarence Public Library Garden Series

  • Landscaping Basics: What NOT to do in the Garden-This first installment of our garden series features a presentation by Terrence O'Brien of Simple Elegance Landscaping.  It will educate attendees about  landscape design and implementation. March 12, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. Registration begins February 26.

Library Craft Time – sponsored by the Clarence Public Library – Put your own personal touch on a paper chandelier in anticipation of the coming spring. This craft is inspired by the colorful holiday of Holi. This program is designed for children ages 6-12 and pre-registration is necessary. The program will be held March 13, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. Registration begins February 27.

Clarence Library Bookmarks -  A Book Discussion Group.  Tuesday, March 13 at 7 pm.  The featured title for March is And After the Fire by Lauren Belfer.

TechKnowLab Series - The third  class is scheduled for Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will cover Word Intermediate. Registration begins March 1.

Terrariums - Create your own personal green houses with plants from the Botanical Gardens. Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.  Registration begins March 3.

Clarence Knitting Club - The group meets the third Tuesday each month from 6 pm-8:30 pm. Bring your knitting (or crocheting) projects and exchange ideas! Tuesday, March 20.

  • Screening, A Farewell to ArmsA 1932 film starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes. Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 pm.
  • Book Discussion, A Farewell to Arms – With moderator Edna Scherf. Monday, May 14 at 7:00 pm.
  • Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon – Open to all ages 17 and up. Instruction provided. Group editing event on articles relating to Hemingway, WWI literature, and postwar Modernism. Thursday, May 17 at 5:00 pm and Saturday, May 19 at 12:00 pm. Registration begins May 3.  Attendance to both sessions is recommended but not required.

  • Floriography-The language of flowers is a means of communication through the use of the arrangement of flowers.  Participants will attend a Floriography lecture and create a tussie-mussie bouquet and floral pen to take home. Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Registration begins April 26. Space is limited.  This program is open to all ages but geared towards those 12 and older.

Clarence Public Library Opportunities

  • Clarence Library Volunteer Application for adults and Community Service students. This form is required for all Community Service volunteers and must be submitted in order to be considered for a volunteer placement at the Clarence Public Library. All applicants should be advised that while all applications will be reviewed, every applicant cannot be guarenteed Community Service hours. updated November 2015

Friends of the Clarence Public Library, Inc.

The Friends of the Clarence Public Library is a non-profit group of citizens who believe that an excellent library is essential to a community.  They work to promote and assist the library and are responsible for raising money to add to the basic collection and provide for special needs.

 

The Friends of the Clarence Public Library generally meets at the library on the fourth Monday of each month.  The next scheduled meeting is Monday February 26, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

"The Friends Place" book store, located off the lobby, is a great place to shop for used and donated books and other material.  The book store is scheduled to be open during regular library hours but is staffed entirely by volunteers.  If you're available to help out, please consider filling out an application and volunteering your time.
